Coming from a Royal Air Force family, I spent the first 16 years of my life moving from country to country and then school to school. Not ideal in some ways but in others, really great. My dad was posted to Norway a couple of times so I spent a lot of my childhood there.
I worked in higher education for 15 years mostly as a student recruiter and directing teams such as European Exchanges. I spent huge amounts of time overseas with work throughout the UK, New York City, New Jersey, Russia, Norway and Italy. I finally packed away my suitcases and set up my own cafe and bakery in Dundee, T-Ann-Cake. I did this for 5 years and LOVED it but whilst madly busy with great customers and staff, decided that I'd ticked that box and needed something new! I sold the cafe in November 2015.
I'd always been interested in attending auctions and antique fairs; my houses over the years have always stored my 'treasures'..... Whilst working in higher education, I dipped my toe in the water of doing a few antique fairs during the odd weekend so this is something that I'll be able to do more of in the future.
Selling my business allowed to pursue a 'proper' skill and couldn't believe my luck to find one of the AMUSF accredited upholstery schools (Cornhill Courses) 4 miles from home!
I started with a few weeks at a leisure class but soon signed up to the three year course. This involved learning both traditional and modern upholstery techniques and thankfully I loved it. It's very physical and, at times, quite dirty work but I loved (most) parts of learning a new skill!
I completed and passed my 3 year AMUSF course with a credit in June 2019. I now have no further excuses not to fully immerse myself into this upholstery business and to finally say yes to most, if not all, of the customer commission queries that come my way!
